KUALA LUMPUR – Pontian MP Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan is Umno’s candidate for the Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker position, and he is hoping to revamp the nation’s legislative chamber.

In a statement today, Ahmad proposed 20 recommendations for parliamentary reforms should he be appointed to the post.

Among his proposals include having three deputy speakers – one of whom is appointed from the opposition while another, a representative from Sabah or Sarawak.

Additionally, he said each opposition and independent MP will be given RM5,000 a month to maintain their service centre.

Ahmad said each MP will be given allocations for town hall sessions in their constituencies to garner feedback on development, welfare and legal issues.

“I also proposed a dialogue session between government, backbenchers and opposition MPs with the media on an intermittent basis, to give their views on current issues.

“Also, I plan to revive the Parliament Supply Act (2019) so the legislature has autonomy in terms of allocations, responsibility, and staff welfare,” he added.

On September 8, Ahmad was announced as Umno’s sole candidate for the deputy Dewan Rakyat speaker role after Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said vacated the seat.

Ahmad is currently facing a trial for money laundering and providing a false statement to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission over RM2 million he received from former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak in 2013. – The Vibes, September 11, 2021
