KUALA LUMPUR – The implementation of Undi18 must be supported by the younger generation’s education on the country’s political system and democratic practices, said the Malaysian Youth Council (MYC).

Its president Jufitri Johar said even though the council is happy with the government’s commitment to implement the lowered voting age, young Malaysians must be adequately educated on their right to vote.

“We welcome the implementation, but we must also remember, this is not just about rights; it is also about responsibility,” he told Bernama.

“The younger generation must be educated on how to choose ethical leaders, and to not merely follow their friends and emotions.”

He said MYC has implemented the virtual Sekolah Politik 2.0 to give youth exposure to Malaysia’s political system.

“We have seen an encouraging response, which shows that the younger generation is extremely interested in exercising their right as voters.”

He expressed confidence that Undi18 can be implemented in the 15th general election, based on the “passion” shown by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Parliament and Law) Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar to undertake the transformation of Parliament.

Peninsular Malay Students’ Association president Mohd Alif Anas Md Noor said nationalism and education on the political system should be included in the school syllabus for students as young as 16.

“Teachers must be neutral and not take sides when imparting education. It must be part of the syllabus to prevent teachers and students from being manipulated by anyone.”

He suggested that the eligible age to qualify as a candidate in a general election be set at 18, in line with the implementation of Undi18.

He added that the Election Commission should find the best mechanism possible to conduct polls during the pandemic.

“We understand that political stability is key to an efficient government. Therefore, elections must be held when the time comes.” – Bernama, September 12, 2021
