6,377 new Covid-19 infections, 16 BID cases in S’wak

KUALA LUMPUR – New Covid-19 cases increased slightly to 6,377 taking the cumulative total to 2,454,749, said Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

The health director-general said today that the country also recorded 6,637 recoveries, bringing the total to 2,354,622.

In a statement, he said 564 cases are in intensive care and out of this, 64 are unconfirmed Covid-19 cases.

Meanwhile, 294 cases require breathing assistance, with 207 of them confirmed Covid-19 patients, while the remaining 87 are being monitored as suspected virus cases. 

Dr Noor Hisham said that from the 6,377 cases reported today, 101 cases are in Categories 3, 4 and 5 while 6,276 are in Categories 1 and 2. 

The country has seen a total of 5,752 clusters since the beginning of the pandemic, including eight new clusters detected today. 

Clusters that have ended are at 5,278 while 474 remain active. 

Dr Noor Hisham said five clusters are from workplaces, with one each from a high-risk group, a community and an educational institute under the Education Ministry. 

The Jalan Batu Gantung high-risk group cluster in Timur Laut, Penang, recorded the highest infections with 42 cases, while the Jalan Besi workplace cluster in Lembah Pantai here recorded the lowest with eight cases.

Sarawak: 34 Covid-19 deaths, 16 BID

In Sarawak, 34 Covid-19 deaths were reported with 16 individuals brought in dead (BID).

The state Disaster Management Committee said the fatalities were aged between 31 to 95.

In a statement, its secretariat said that the deaths were recorded over the past few days in Betong with nine cases, followed by Sibu (6), Sri Aman (5), Miri (4), Kuching (4), Bintulu (4), Limbang (1) and Sarikei (1).

Today, the deaths were confirmed as caused by the coronavirus following tests done on tissue samples of the deceased, the secretariat said.

It also said the 16 BID had died in their homes.

There were 676 new infections in the state today, with Kuching reporting 170 cases, followed by Miri with 154, while other districts logged several dozen cases each. – The Vibes, October 28, 2021
