GEORGE TOWN – Representatives of several concerned non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Penang today handed over a memorandum to the Bangladesh consulate to mark their protest against the ongoing violence and brutality on minority Hindus in Bangladesh.
S. Velayutham, the coordinator of the NGOs, handed over the memorandum to the Bangladeshi honorary consul in Penang Datuk Shaik Ismail Allaudin at his office on Jalan Bishop here at about 10.30am.
According to Velayutham, Shaik Ismail assured that he would bring the memorandum to the attention of the Bangladeshi government.
“We, a small number of the representatives from the Indian NGOs in Penang, during a peaceful gathering handed over a memorandum to the consul and left the scene,” Velayutham said.
“We hope the Bangladeshi government will take action to stop the violence against the minority Hindus there.
“It is the duty of the Bangladeshi government to protect the interest of the minority groups on their land,” he added.
The representatives dispersed after handing over the memorandum.
Violence on Hindu communities in Bangladesh, including the burning and looting of houses and shops, breaking down of temples, physical assault and a few killings have been reported across Bangladesh over the last 10 days.
In a statement, the United Nations has called on the Bangladeshi government to ensure protection of minorities and an impartial probe. – The Vibes, October 29, 2021
