KOTA KINABALU – The slow drip exodus continues for Warisan as its Lahad Datu MP Datuk Mohamaddin Ketapi, 64, announces his immediate departure from the Sabah-based party to become a government-friendly independent.
He has garnered some controversial headlines over the years – for example, when he said last year that the Lahad Datu incursion in 2013 and the Covid-19 pandemic were “sandiwara” (theatre).
“Although I'm a ‘friendly’ for my state seat, I’m ‘purely independent at the federal level’.”
In a statement, he blamed the lack of development for Lahad Datu and Segama on being in the state opposition bloc, saying he wants to keep his election promise to bring development to his constituencies.
“The Segama constituency has yet to see any form of development, not even a public toilet.
“I remembered I promised Segama voters last year during the state election to bring some form of progress and development, for example building a small district office there. So, I’m of the opinion that if I remain in the opposition bloc, Segama’s progress will be neglected.
“With this, I announce my departure from Warisan and become a government friendly independent rep.”
He added that after more than a year as an opposition MP, Lahad Datu also has not seen any development.
“If my independent vote can help make decisions in the interest of the people and the country, I am very honored to support the efforts of the federal government, because it is my responsibility as the elected representative to see through good government efforts for the sake of the country and the people.”
Mohamaddin, who is also the Segama assemblyman, served as the tourism, culture and arts minister in the Pakatan Harapan administration and was one of the closest allies to Warisan president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal.
Mohamaddin is the third Warisan leader to have exited the party.
Earlier this year, Sebatik rep Hassan A. Gani and Sindumin assemblyman Datuk Yusof Yacob left the party.
