GEORGE TOWN – Penang continued its programmes to empower youth interested in joining politics as Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow launched the Penang edition of Calon18.
He said with the completion of the programme and its workshops, participants will be able to understand what it takes to be successful political candidates.
The programme by the Penang Youth Development Corporation (PYDC) was also attended by Youth and Sports Committee chairman Soon Lip Chee, PYDC general manager Gwee Sai Ling, Undi18 advocate Tharma Pillai, and 85 participants.
“About 30 years ago when I entered politics, I was sent to the political battlefield straight away, while learning to toe the line with senior politicians. I knew nothing about politics and we did not have workshops and programmes,” said Chow.
He said that at the time, young politicians did not know about the workings of the parliamentary democracy system, general elections, and handling the media.
“It is my hope that through the Calon18 programme, the participants will all be able to play a role in leading the development of the state and the country.
“The participants are selected after undergoing a very tough screening process. Take advantage of this platform to learn and explore topics such as political financing, institutional reform, and policy formulation to shape the future of this nation.”
The Penang assembly had on September 1, with the full support of all parties, approved the drafting of the Penang Constitution Bill (Amendment 2021), which amends eligibility for state assembly seats from 21 years to 18 years. – The Vibes, November 6, 2021
