MIRI – A key road linking rural areas of the Baram district in northern Sarawak has collapsed, severing land communication and ease of travel for thousands of natives in the interior.
Dominic Kallang, a villager from the district, has alerted Baram PKR division chief Roland Engan over the incident that happened this morning.
“The incident is at KM12 Jalan Samling, about 10km from Lapok,” Engan told reporters in Miri today.
Engan said Dominic had taken pictures that show the collapsed road – as the entire side of the hillslope has caved in, into a deep ravine next to the road.
Currently, vehicles and villagers are unable to pass through, and the politician’s office is seeking assistance from the authorities.
Meanwhile, Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau told The Vibes that he has heard of the incident and is gathering details at the moment – seeing that the road is in his constituency.
“Yes, I heard there is a road collapse. I am getting the exact details and location now,” said the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu lawmaker.
Last night saw stormy weather hitting the area with heavy rain throughout the night, as well as the pre-dawn hours.
The road mainly links hundreds of longhouses with Miri City, which is about a four-hour-long drive away (roughly 200km). – The Vibes, November 10, 2021
