GEORGE TOWN – The crime index in Penang has dropped partly due to the pandemic and heavy police presence for the last 10 months.
State Criminal Investigations Department chief ACP Rahimi Raais said the general crime index has been reduced by 30% compared to the same period last year.
“The movement control order, extra police patrols and public awareness have helped to bring down the crime index,” he said after a breakfast meeting with the media at state police headquarters here today.
He said there was a 25% drop in motorcycle theft cases as police recorded 1,707 cases this year, 363 less than in 2019.
Armed robberies registered 192 cases, which was a 42% drop, while non-armed robbery cases dropped 27% to 135 cases.
There were 136 car theft cases, which was a 49% reduction.
Rahimi also sought public cooperation to further reduce crime cases in Penang. – The Vibes, November 4, 2020
