KUCHING – With the state polls just three days away, DAP national chairman Lim Kit Siang is engaged in a punishing schedule in Sarawak to touch base with voters here as well as in Miri, Sarikei, and Sibu.
The age-defying 80-year-old party stalwart arrived here last Thursday, spending two days in Miri before dashing off to Sarikei on Sunday for another day of visiting constituencies there and returning to Sibu on Monday.
Yesterday, the Iskandar Puteri MP returned to Parliament to vote for the constitutional amendments that granted greater recognition to the Malaysia Agreement 1963.
This morning, Lim returned to Kuching to begin another challenging trail visiting wards around the city where DAP candidates are contesting.
Kuching has several Chinese majority seats, namely Batu Kawah, Kota Sentosa, Stakan, Batu Kitang, Pending, and Padungan, where DAP candidates are involved in multi-cornered fights.
Speaking to The Vibes, Roger Teoh Tze Loo, special assistant to Lim and DAP national organising secretary, said: “Lim visited the Kota Sentosa and Batu Kitang constituencies.”
Towards late afternoon, the tenacious Lim visited the Stakan constituency, just as a heavy drizzle threatened to ruin his walkabout session.
Arriving with a big entourage in a colourful motorcade bearing the party’s livery, Lim spent about 45 minutes in the constituency.
However, mindful of the standard operating procedures, he extended his fist to greet constituents in a quick “hi and bye” gesture.
Had it not been for the Covid-19 protocols, Lim’s visit to Kampung Quop to meet voters would have been merrier and more impactful. Villagers here usually greet visitors enthusiastically, especially when a cavalcade of motor vehicles carrying the party’s logo rolled into the multi-purpose hall such as what had taken place today.
Some households opened their front doors to find out what the fanfare was all about. Save for the social distancing requirements, the villagers would have certainly come out of their homes to greet Lim, as the village does not receive high-profile guests often.
According to Teoh, Lim will be up early tomorrow to visit voters in Siburan and Mambong.
He will return to Kuala Lumpur on Friday, the eve of the election. – The Vibes, December 15, 2021
