GEORGE TOWN – Penang made the list of 15 best islands in the world to retire on, according to the International Living magazine, ranking third on the list worldwide and first in Asia.
Penang state executive councillor for tourism and creative economy Yeoh Soon Hin said that the accolade proves Penang is still a relevant and competitive tourism powerhouse in the international market, even in times of uncertainty.
“Penang is home to a galore of heavenly street food, juxtaposed against colonial buildings that tell a historical tale.
“Our pristine nature, tropical climate, and excellent connectivity are exactly why you should visit this Pearl of the Orient,” he said in a Facebook post today.
He also said that despite international borders being closed for almost two years, Penang has continuously received globally renowned recognitions and listings.
According to the original article by International Living, Penang has been a favourite of the expatriate community for decades.
The low cost of living, great street food, picturesque views, eclectic architecture, and a vibrant art scene is also what draws retirees to settle down at the island state.
It is also considered a conducive Southeast Asian hub as Penang's international airport, from which many low-cost Asian airlines operate, makes exploring the region very easy.
Penang does not only attract expatriates to retire, but Malaysians too.
Angela Margory Pinto, 73, who lived in Kuala Lumpur her whole life, recently made the decision to retire in Penang, even though she has been retired for 17 years.
“I came to stay here permanently only this year but was testing it out for about three to four years ago.
“Everything is so convenient and the cost of living is not as high as KL.
“My number one reason to move here is the good food, and I feel safer here than in KL,” she told The Vibes.
On the list were also other renowned Asian islands such as Bali (ranked ninth) and Koh Samui (10th).
