KUALA LUMPUR – Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg was sworn in as the seventh Sarawak chief minister at 10.42pm tonight at Astana Negeri. 

The Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) chairman, clad in a black baju Melayu with a matching sampin, took his oath before Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud. 

Among those who were present to witness the ceremony were Taib’s wife Toh Puan Ragad Kurdi Taib, Abang Johari’s wife Datuk Juma'ani Tuanku Bujang, Datuk Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, Datuk Douglas Uggah Embas, and senior civil servants. 

As of 10.55pm, the Election Commission (EC) confirmed that GPS has secured 71 of the 82 seats up for grabs, retaining its two-third majority.

Earlier, Abang Johari nabbed the Gedong seat for the first time after moving from Satok – which he has held for the past nine terms – with 4,310 votes.

The 71-year-old beat Parti Sarawak Bersatu’s (PSB) Mohamad Sofian Fariz Sharbini who garnered 703 votes; Amanah’s Cikgu Kamal (94 votes); and Parti Bumi Kenyalang’s Tomson Ango (157 votes). – The Vibes, December 18, 2021
