KUALA LUMPUR – Former PKR man Larry Sng has been elected to helm the newly formed Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM) as its first president during its general meeting today.

The Julau MP said all members of the party, including its leaders, have expressed the desire to support the ruling government of the day, and to work hard to ensure that the aspirations of the people are upheld.

Sng was among 31 names announced among the party’s top brass and supreme council.

He had told The Vibes in March last year that he had defected from PKR, where he was the Sarawak chairman, to become a government-friendly independent politician due to Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) issues with reportedly unequal allocation for opposition MPs.

He said that this could have been avoided had the coalition implemented the necessary reforms while in power.

He had also said that when he was on the opposition bench, there was a shortage of funds to address his constituents’ basic needs, prompting his move across the aisle.

Haniza Mohamed Talha, former PKR women chief and current state assemblywoman of Lembah Jaya in Selangor, was appointed as PBM’s deputy president.

Merluan assemblyman Wong Judat is the deputy president II and Tebrau lawmaker Steven Choong is senior vice-president I.

Among other notable names revealed in a press statement issued by Sng today are two Bersatu assemblymen from Perak: A. Sivasubramaniam (Buntong) and Paul Yong (Tronoh).

Sivasubramaniam was made senior vice-president II, while Yong was elected as the party’s treasurer-general.

Malim Nawar assemblyman Leong Cheok Keng, who was sacked from DAP last January, was elected into the party’s supreme council, along with Ong Chin Wen and Lee Chin Cheh, both former PKR reps.

Previously, Bersatu supreme council member and Ampang MP Datuk Zuraida Kamaruddin was rumoured to lead the political outfit.

However, the plantation industries and commodities minister was not present at the party’s launch, which was held at the Wyndham Acmar Klang Hotel on December 21.

Instead of announcing the official launch of PBM, the party declared the inclusion of new members from non-government organisation Penggerak Komuniti Negara (PKN), which is associated with Zuraida. – The Vibes, January 8, 2022
