NIBONG TEBAL – Putrajaya needs to enforce measures taken during the Nipah outbreak in 1998 to prevent further spread of the African swine fever (ASF) in the country, said Bayan Baru MP Sim Tze Tzin.
Sim, who is former deputy Agriculture and Food Industries minister, also called for pig farmers to report to the authorities if their animals are infected.
“The government could use the armed forces to do culling if ASF is found at any pig farms in the country.
“By doing this, we can contain and prevent the spread of the disease from one farm to another. I also want the pig farmers to be honest in reporting to the authorities if they detect any cases in their farms.”
Sim said this after visiting a pig farm at the Valdor Village near Sg Bakap here.
The farm has a total of 18,000 pigs, while Valdor village has 42 pig farmers and Seberang Prai Selatan has 51 pig farms.
ASF has been detected in the wild and in farms in Sabah, Melaka, Perak and Pahang.
It is a deadly infectious disease of pigs and wild boars, and there is no vaccine to prevent it.
