KUALA LUMPUR – The public will likely see several new faces in PKR’s leadership line-up soon as the opposition party is expected to hold its central party polls within the next three months.
Although the top brass has not decided on the exact date, PKR communications chief Fahmi Fadzil said he foresees that the election will be held in the early part of the second quarter of this year.
He described it as an urgent matter, especially in light of a number of positions having been left vacant due to the departure of “traitors”, as he called them, since the Sheraton Move in February last year.
“There are gaping holes in the leadership in terms of deputy president, some vice-presidents as well as seats in the central leadership council.
Rather than having a stopgap measure where temporary leaders are put in these positions, we felt that it is necessary to now conduct full party polls.
“Of course, we have to look at SOPs to see what can be done (when conducting the election).
“Oftentimes, party elections are very exciting affairs. So we have to balance between public good, public health and the need to get the party back in order,” he said.
Fahmi was speaking to The Vibes at his office after receiving a donation for books for his micro-library programme from the Vinod Sekhar Foundation on Monday.
Several positions were left empty after former PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali and former vice-president Datuk Zuraida Kamaruddin exited the party as part of the Sheraton Move, which contributed to Pakatan Harapan being removed from Putrajaya.
Another notable vacancy in the party was when Datuk Xavier Jayakumar resigned as party vice-president and as a party member last March.
Fahmi revealed that he is considering contesting for a post in the party election.
However, he refused to divulge further details on which position he has his eye on.
“But I will not be contesting for the party president post,” he said in jest.
“I think I have learnt a great deal having served as the party’s communications director since 2013.
“I think as someone who is relatively young in the party, I feel that I can probably help serve in any capacity.” – The Vibes, January 14, 2022
