MIRI – The Covid-19 tally in Sarawak today saw 129 new cases, breaching the three-digit mark again after a lull of two months.
Kuching division saw 54 new cases, Sibu 35, Miri 18, while numerous other districts had several cases, according to the latest updates from the state Disaster Management Committee.
The committee said these new cases are in the category one and two, which respectively cover those with no symptoms and mild symptoms.
There were no new Covid-19 deaths reported today.
A local politician has said that cases of the Omicron variant in Sibu division in central Sarawak are expected to see a constant surge over the next two months.
The Sibu Divisional Disaster Management Committee is now preparing to deal with this upcoming infection surge, said its coordinator Dr Annuar Rapaee.
“We are now seeing a trend of increasing infections of Covid-19 Omicron cases on a daily basis in Sibu.
“The 35 cases is the highest number of daily infection cases in Sibu for the past two months.
“We are expecting to see another wave of infections that may last for next two months,” he said in his social media chats with his constituents.
Dr Annuar, who is state assemblyman for Nangka, said because Omicron is several times more infectious than Delta, the number of patients in hospitals may shoot up.
“That is why we are getting ready a new field hospital next to Sibu Hospital,” he said, adding that it will have 100 beds.
“The facilities are being put in place now. We are ready for the expected rise in admissions soon,” he said.
Dr Annuar warned that the community spread of Omicron may be difficult to control.
“That is why the people must not take this lightly. They must wear double-masks, adhere to physical distancing and personal hygiene.
“All the SOPs by the health authorities have been put in place and these must be strictly obeyed. Avoid going to crowded places. Stay home as much as possible,” he said.
