KUALA LUMPUR – Daily Covid-19 infections continue to increase with 22,133 new cases logged today, bringing the cumulative total to 3,083,683 infections.
According to Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, 146 (0.66%) of the cases today are in the more severe categories – Category 3 (102 cases - 0.46%), Category 4 (24 cases - 0.11%) and 20 infections in Category 5.
A total of 5,831 (26.34%) cases are in Category 1, while 16,156 (73.0%) are in Category 2.
Today’s figure of 146 cases in the more critical categories is a slight increase from yesterday’s 87 cases in the three categories.
Category 3 patients are those who are symptomatic with pneumonia, while those in Category 4 are symptomatic and have contracted lung infections that necessitate ventilator support.
Category 5 is the most drastic form of Covid-19, as patients are in critical condition and require assisted ventilation.
The health director-general said that among the 146 cases in these severe categories, 30 (20.6%) patients were unvaccinated while 79 (54.1%) were fully vaccinated but had not yet received a booster dose.
“Besides one pregnant woman, 58 (39.7%) patients were above the age of 60, 46 (31.5%) were individuals with comorbidities, and 15 (10.3%) have died,” he said, adding that two victims were brought in dead.
Nonetheless, Dr Noor Hisham said that the nation recorded 8,517 recoveries today, bringing the total recovered cases in the country since the pandemic erupted to 2,860,954.
“Among the cases reported today, 199 are receiving treatment in intensive care units while 115 of them require respiratory assistance,” he said.
The nation has seen a total of 6,613 clusters since the beginning of the pandemic, including 17 new clusters detected today.
The number of clusters that have ended are at 6,178 while 435 clusters remain active.
The national Covid-19 infectivity rate (Rt) decreased marginally as today’s rate of 1.38 is less than yesterday’s rate of 1.43.
