KOTA KINABALU – Warisan is keen to contest in state seats within Johor’s Pasir Gudang federal constituency and is currently identifying the most suitable local candidates to represent them.

In an article by the Star, its president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal reportedly said that his party will be announcing their list once the time is right.

“Warisan had gone nationwide in December last year, but we did not contest in the Melaka state election to give way to Pakatan Harapan (PH).

“However, this time, we feel that we need to provide a choice to the people of Johor,” he reportedly said in a press conference after meeting with Pasir Gudang residents near Pasar Muafakat Sabah in Pasir Gudang, yesterday. 

Johor state election will be held on March 12, and it will be the first time that Warisan is contesting outside of Sabah since it was formed in 2016. 

The two state seats in Pasir Gudang are Johor Jaya and Permas. 

Furthermore, based on unofficial statistics, there is an estimated 20,000 Sabahans in Johor, mostly living in the Pasir Gudang area.

In GE14, DAP’s Liow Cai Tung won the Johor Jaya seat while Che Zakaria of Bersatu won in Permas.

Currently, it was also reported that the Sabah-based party has not received an invitation from other parties to form an alliance for the election.  

“The important thing is for us to ensure the strength and stability of our own house first,” he said. 

He also confirmed that the new candidates will be required to sign declaration letters to ensure that they will not leave the party after they win, saying it has always been the Warisan’s way. 

Furthermore, he added that the majority of their candidates will be new faces.

Shafie also said that Mazlan Bujang, former Bersatu state executive councilor and incumbent Puteri Wangsa has met with him several times, possibly to discuss joining Warisan.
