THE first day of campaigning for the 17th Sabah state election kicked off today with Kota Kinabalu residents waking up to a sea of flags adorning their city.

Checks by Bernama around the city, which is divided into three state seats - Luyang, Likas and Api-Api  - revealed flags of various political parties lining the side of streets, roundabouts and on pedestrian bridges, along with posters and buntings of candidates at road junctions and private premises - signs that campaigning teams and volunteers have been hard at work.

Flags from Pakatan Harapan (PH), Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), Parti Warisan (Warisan) and Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR) seemingly vie for the attention of potential voters along Jalan KK By Pass, Jalan Kemajuan and Jalan Tun Fuad Stephens.

PH and GRS flags are also spotted along Jalan Lintas  towards Inanam while Barisan Nasional flags were staked out on roads from Lok Kawi, Putatan all the way to Kota Kinabalu.

Missing this election are the PKR and DAP flags, as candidates of both parties will be contesting under the PH logo.

Api-Api PH logistics staffer, Hassim Sulaiman said they intend to set up about 6,000 flags in the next few days before moving on to distributing flyers at nearby local markets next week.

“Our five-man team started putting up flags since 7 am and will carry on late into the night. We need to get it done as soon as possible, then we will help distribute campaign flyers at local markets,” he said when met in front of the Employees’ Provident Fund (KWSP) building here today.
