KUALA LUMPUR – A speedy 10-year-old local boy has set a national record by taking only 7.9 seconds to whip on ten surgical face masks, making him the fastest person on record to accomplish such a feat in the country.

His achievement is just over two seconds short of the world record set by a man in Italy late last year.

The stunt, certified by the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR), is part of a campaign aimed at encouraging people to keep their masks on while out in public to curb the spread of Covid-19.

Hailing from Bahau, Negri Sembilan, young Viswaa Palani achieved the record-setting success through the month-long #MyMaskOn online challenge organised by MBOR with the support of local mask manufacturer Medicos.

“Viswaa’s concentration and laser-like precision ensured he swiftly put on every mask perfectly one after another,” Malaysia Book of Records said in a press statement on the win yesterday.

The current world record is held by Rocco Mercurio at 5.2 seconds set on August 5 last year.

According to Guinness World Records, Mercurio, who is from Villa San Giovanni in Italy, bettered his own previous time of 6.19 seconds to achieve this record.

MBOR marketing director Jwan Heah said that the #MyMaskOn challenge gave the public an opportunity to showcase their talents while vying to become national record holders.

Five other fastest participants also won prizes with Viswaa, who is a pupil at SJK(T) Ladang Sialang.

Besides bagging the national record title, the lad also received a year’s supply of medical grade face masks.

“We learnt a lot from this campaign and will be working with brands to create more exciting challenges for Malaysians in the near future,” Heah said, conveying his congratulatory wishes to winners and participants. – The Vibes, February 22, 2022
