Warisan not keen on any political pacts right now: Shafie

KLUANG – Warisan continues to distract itself from the possibility of working with any parties to form the Johor government, should the Sabah-based party win seats in the upcoming polls.

Its president, Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal said instead that Warisan prefers to remain an opposition party, providing a check and balance to the Johor government.

The party’s direction, he said, will aid the fight for the rights of Johor’s people.

“The candidates fielded by Warisan are no ordinary individuals. They are experienced in  local issues and are close to the communities.

“We have received many invites from political parties, but as of now we have no interest in working with them.

“Our main goal is to be the opposition and check and balance, as we all know and realise that the country and state faces many problems,” he said in a statement on his Facebook page today.

Shafie said Malaysians had seen a 60-year reign of a single political power that had never gone unchallenged.

On the opposition front, the Semporna MP also hit out at Pakatan Harapan, saying he had given the opposition alliance enough room to prove itself in the Sarawak and Melaka polls.

He also provided his support to PH leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the federal power crisis in 2020.

“Who said we have not given others any chance? In the Sarawak and Melaka polls, we gave them the opportunity. But what happened?

“We saw for ourselves that PH itself was rejected by the people in the two state elections. So what does this mean? Malaysians want a change and now they are also rejecting PH.

“This is why we are coming out. We want to provide an alternative platform to the people. Malaysia is owned by all Malaysians,” he said.

Warisan is fielding six candidates for the Johor election, namely in Bekok, Mahkota, Johor Jaya, Permas, Bukit Batu, and Pekan Nenas.

Shafie said while he was aware that it will not be easy for Warisan to capture any seats in Johor as the party is new in the peninsula, he remains upbeat that Johor folk will give the party a chance.

“This will not be easy but at the same time, we will know our level and the Johor polls will be a test for Warisan to face the forthcoming 15th general election,” he said. – The Vibes, March 9, 2022
