KUALA LUMPUR – Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has expressed his willingness to resign as Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman following the coalition’s abysmal performance in the Johor polls.
Of the total 56 seats it contested in, PN only managed to secure three seats – Endau, Maharani and Bukit Kepong.
“I don’t have a problem to step down if the members want me to do so. I have done my best. So, for me, it’s okay (for me to step down),” he said in a press conference tonight.
The former prime minister admitted that he is responsible for the coalition’s defeat in the state polls, saying, “if we win, I am responsible, if we lose, I am also responsible.”
“I am ready at any time, and I will accept it if any party member makes a decision on my position. We practise democracy in this party.”
Although his coalition entered the election as an underdog, he is proud that PN had made an inroad into certain areas in Johor and have received great traction.
“In certain areas and zones, it seems that we have received quite good support, although we are relatively new.
“It means that campaign strategies implemented during the election period have garnered the attention of Johoreans.”
Separately, Muhyiddin reminded Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob that he should negotiate with PN if the latter decides to dissolve the Parliament.
According to him, PN has a total of 72 MPs in the Parliament whereas Umno only has 42 seats.
“One of the things we agreed on is that whenever the prime minister decides to dissolve the Parliament or get the assent of the Agong to dissolve the Parliament, he must consult and discuss with the top leaders of PN.
“That is something that we have agreed on. The process of economic recovery has just begun, and Covid-19 is still an issue.
“We really hope that the prime minister will discuss (the dissolution of Parliament) with us before any decision is made on this matter,” he said. – The Vibes, March 12, 2022
