KUALA LUMPUR – Political observers expect the Umno general assembly starting tonight to be fiery, as delegates will be discussing the general election dates as well as the survival of Muafakat Nasional (MN) – the cooperation the party has with PAS.
Political analyst associate professor Awang Azman Awang Pawi said the delegates will lobby for a snap general election to take advantage of the win in Johor.
“This is because BN and its linchpin Umno has the momentum to garner a big win based on the respective state elections in Melaka, Sarawak, and most recently, Johor,” he was quoted as saying by Getaran, The Vibes’ sister portal.
“Each delegate will definitely urge party leaders to hold the 15th general election earlier based on the country’s current political state.
“If the general election is delayed, there is a possibility of them losing momentum as it will give space to the opposition to re-strategise and strengthen relationships with each other.
Additionally, Awang said the delegates will be seeking an explanation over the Johor menteri besar appointment controversy.
“During the campaign, Datuk Seri Hasni Mohammad was the ‘poster boy’ for BN. However, the one sworn in was Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi.
“The delegates will want an explanation from party leaders on the matter.”
He added that MN’s fate could be determined based on the recommendations from delegates who will be speaking during the four-day event.
