GEORGE TOWN – To prevent the increase of Covid-19 infections especially during Ramadan, Penang Health Committee chairman Dr Norlela Ariffin is suggesting that more Ramadan bazaars be set up to avoid congestion.

“As we enter the endemic stage, we have to accept that there is nothing more we can do about the virus except to follow the SOPs (standard operating procedures) strictly.

“When the pandemic first started, the government announced the shutdown of all the Ramadan bazaars and it affected the sellers badly.

“But I recently discussed during the exco meeting that to stop the rise of infection, it is time to reduce crowds, especially in indoor spaces,” she told The Vibes.

She also advised the public to make wise decisions when deciding to dine out. Choosing a restaurant with spaced out seating arrangements and good air ventilation will help reduce infections.

“Because masks are removed when dining, it is the opportune time for the virus to spread,” she said.

Therefore, she advised food and beverage operators who operate indoors to be responsible by fixing proper air filters and ensuring proper ventilation in the outlet.

Just yesterday, Penang recorded 2,315 cases that have been reported to the Penang Health Department. Out of this number, 1,247 comes from testing after the onset of symptoms.

From the 23 known clusters, eight originated from schools, seven from high-risk groups and four from factories. – The Vibes, March 19, 2022
