GEORGE TOWN – The B40 group in Penang will be getting health screenings as a bid to reduce mortality rates among those with comorbidities and Covid-19.

The state government said it will be working with ProtectHealth Corporation Sdn Bhd to expand the Peduli Kesihatan outreach programme in preparation of a possible surge in Covid-19 cases as borders will reopen from April 1 onwards as part of the transition to the endemic phase.

Penang Health Committee chairman Dr Norlela Ariffin told The Vibes that people with comorbidities who contracted Covid-19 are at a higher risk to die, so early detection of these health issues should be a priority.

She added that 83.1% of the B40 group in the state has yet to participate in the free health screening programme.

“Our focus will be on health screenings for the poor and B40 in rural areas and public housing so that they detect any health problems they may have and get early treatment.

“The data we have showed many Covid-19 patients who were in Category 5 and died had comorbidities, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, among others.

“If we detect the onset of health problems, we can stop its escalation so it does not become chronic or fatal.”

Due to financial hindrances, she said health checks may not be a priority among the B40 as they are costly even before seeking treatment.

“Now that everyone is doing their Covid-19 self-test, I hope that they will also make it a habit to get their health checks.

“Healthy people who get Covid-19 are less likely to die and only suffer from mild symptoms.”

Norlela hopes to get cooperation from leaders of all levels to support and ensure the success of the programme.

The PeKa B40 programme was initiated by former health minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad and is open to those in the low-income group aged above 40. – The Vibes, March 20, 2022
