MIRI – State leaders need to bring in experts if they cannot deal with the worsening floods in Sarawak, said Sahabat Alam Malaysia (SAM).

SAM Sarawak ground coordinator Jok Jau Evong said there seems to be a lack of mitigation measures being implemented in the interior.

“The latest round of floods over the past few weeks has caused great hardship and Marudi town is inundated in many areas.

“People are having difficulty travelling by roads or rivers and the local economy is affected as many shops are flooded,” he told The Vibes.

Jok said this is the second time this year since January that Sg Baram and its tributaries have overflowed, flooding areas in Marudi, Telang Usan, and Mulu.

“Villages and longhouses have been inundated outside of Marudi town as well as all the riverine settlements located along Sg Baram, Sg Tutoh, and other tributaries.”
