KUALA LUMPUR – Umno will be fielding Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob as the party's prime ministerial candidate for the coming general election (GE15).

Its secretary-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said in a statement that the Umno Supreme Council made the decision unanimously.

The decision came following a Supreme Council meeting chaired by Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi at the party’s headquarters in Menara Dato Onn here today.

Aside from announcing Ismail Sabri’s candidacy, Ahmad said Umno will also hold a special general assembly on May 14 to amend the party’s constitution.

He added that the special meeting seeking to amend Umno’s constitution next month will touch on the party’s selection period.

“The Umno Day celebrations and Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house will also be held the same day.”

Ahmad personally handed out the statement to the media during Umno’s fast-breaking event at the World Trade Centre here this evening.

The statement also said the memorandum of understanding between the government and Pakatan Harapan will no longer continue after it expires on July 31.

However, he said the tabling of the anti-hopping law must be continued and supported without compromising with any party that wants to see it fail by changing its details.

“Umno’s stance is that the anti-hopping law must be realised immediately, as a manifestation to ensure the rights of voters are protected and respected.” – The Vibes, April 14, 2022
