SANDAKAN – Sabah Bersatu deputy chairman Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun today denied rumours that the party has chosen a candidate to contest in the Batu Sapi by-election on December 5.

“As Sabah Bersatu deputy chairman, I’m not aware of this. As far as I know, this is not true.”

All eyes are on Bersatu and Warisan as the two parties have yet to take a stand on Batu Sapi.

To date, Barisan Nasional, Parti Bersatu Sabah, Sabah Star, Parti Cinta Sabah, Liberal Democratic Party, Sabah Progressive Party, United Sabah National Organisation and Parti Kerjasama Anak Negeri have opted to sit out the polls.

Warisan has remained tight-lipped over the seat, while independent candidate Hamzah Abdullah has expressed his intention to contest.

The by-election is necessitated by the death of Warisan MP Datuk Liew Vui Keong on October 2.

On October 13, the Election Commission announced that nomination for Batu Sapi will be on November 23 and early voting on December 1, with the campaign duration set for 12 days.

Questions abound over the by-election, especially after detection of several Covid-19 clusters in Batu Sapi, and high Covid-19 cases in Sandakan district, which Batu Sapi is in.

Today, Sandakan recorded the highest Covid-19 cases in Sabah with 223 cases, contributed by seven active clusters and other screenings. – The Vibes, November 13, 2020
