KUALA LUMPUR – The water supply to over 470 localities in Selangor is expected to return in stages starting tonight, after state water operator Air Selangor had ordered an unscheduled shutdown of the Jenderam Hilir raw water pump station earlier this morning due to odour pollution.

Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said checks done at 3.30pm today found that the pollution had been neutralised, several hours after it was first detected around dawn.

“Water supply is expected to resume in stages beginning tonight. This is the third such incident of pollution in the same place this week,” Amirudin said in a tweet.

Earlier this morning, Air Selangor had announced unscheduled water cuts in five districts in Selangor, namely Petaling, Hulu Langat, Sepang, Putrajaya and Kuala Langat.

Affected areas include 172 localities in Petaling, 196 in Sepang, 54 areas in Hulu Langat, 23 areas in Putrajaya and 27 areas in Kuala Langat.

Air Selangor said in a statement that the Jenderam Hilir pump had to be shut down after pollution was detected on the surface of the water source. The state water operator later shut down the Sg Semenyih and Bukit Tampoi water treatment plants.

Prior to Amirudin’s tweet, Air Selangor had warned of supply cuts from 3pm today, and that alternative assistance such as water tankers would be mobilised to affected locations. – The Vibes, May 3, 2022
