KOTA KINABALU – It appears that Muda’s snub during the Johor polls in March is water under the bridge as Warisan president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal has reached out to Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman to “talk”.
“I communicated with him (Syed Saddiq) yesterday, I said let’s talk. I gave him my views, so it is up to him.
“I told him to build his party first and I will strengthen mine,” he told reporters after the launch of the Warisan Care programme at the party’s headquarters in Kolombong, near here, today.
“In the early stages, I had informed Syed Saddiq: let me launch my party first and then you launch yours. Later, let’s sign a memorandum. But unfortunately, it did not go well,” he said, referring to the Muda chief.
Warisan and Muda tried to ally as part of the Sabah-based party’s expansion to the peninsula last December.
It was expected that the two would work together during the Johor campaign, but that went sideways. However, Syed Saddiq visited Sabah later to foster ties with Warisan.
Meanwhile, Shafie is keeping his options open with other parties, reiterating Warisan’s stand on a “smart partnership”.
Warisan was a Pakatan Harapan ally but decided to go on its own after the Sheraton Move in February 2020 that saw the collapse of the federal government.
He also did not dismiss possibilities of fielding candidates in the peninsula in the next general election.
He noted some acceptance among West Malaysians of his party in Johor, Kedah, and Selangor.
