KUALA LUMPUR – Lawmakers who hold the chairmanship in government-linked companies and government-linked investment companies should take a 50% pay cut, proposed Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail in the Dewan Rakyat today.
The former deputy prime minister said the monies can be channelled to the Covid-19 Fund instead.
During her Budget 2021 debate speech, she referred to the gender gap in Malaysia, saying the Covid-19 pandemic has caused problems for women in terms of gender-based violence and work safety.
“The movement control order has caused the risk of domestic violence to rise. Budget 2021 must prioritise spending to boost the enforcement of laws and social support for victims of gender-based violence.
“The government can set up an inter-agency fund to train first responders, including police officers, medical personnel and social workers, to handle cases of gender-based violence.”
She said the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry, which she previously headed, has been allocated RM2.6 billion – less than 1% of the Budget’s total RM322.5 billion.
“This is extremely unreasonable given that Malaysia has 15.9 million women citizens, or 48.5% of the population.” – The Vibes, November 17, 2020
