KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia will not resort to drastic actions in handling China’s encroachment on its waters so as to avoid escalation and instability, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.
Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Kamarudin Jaffar (Bersatu-Bandar Tun Razak) said the country will instead employ a more calculated and diplomatic approach in addressing the matter.
He said while Malaysia remains committed to addressing issues pertaining to the South China Sea, it will be done in a constructive manner, utilising the appropriate forums and channels.
Kamarudin said this approach was underscored by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein in his meeting with his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, in October, where the latter agreed to handle the matter diplomatically.
“The ministry always gives special attention to security in our waters. Among other things, we conduct continuous patrols, inspections and enforcement to ensure our sovereignty and interests are protected.
“However, the government will always take a cautious approach to avoid any actions that could lead to unwanted incidents or increased tensions in the affected waters.”
He added that voicing out its disagreement via diplomatic channels does not mean that Malaysia is offering a dispute settlement to China.
“It just proves that Malaysia does not recognise China’s claim and actions in our waters.”
The deputy minister was responding to Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim’s (BN-Arau) question on whether the government plans to take a more assertive approach in dealing with China’s frequent intrusion in the waters of Beting Patinggi Ali, off Sarawak.
Shahidan had suggested that Malaysia emulate other countries, such as the Philippines and Indonesia, by openly calling out and protesting the republic’s actions.
Kamarudin said Malaysia has acted, and will continue to act, in line with international laws, adding that it has proven successful.
