KUALA LUMPUR – Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin has alluded that the framework for the registration of cannabidiol (CBD) products will be released by the end of this year.

During his winding-up speech in the Dewan Rakyat today, Khairy said the registration and usage of some of the CBD products will be conducted next year.

“There is a high chance that we may release the skeleton for the registration of products containing CBD by the end of the year,” he said.

Meanwhile, he also said the first meeting of the Cannabis and Ketum (kratom) Industry Development Taskforce will be held on Monday (25 July).

The minister, who is also the task force’s chairman, suggested that the inaugural meeting may discuss the approval of the registration of cannabis-based products.

Elaborating on the matter, the Rembau MP said the task force will come up with the basic framework for the registration of ketum or cannabis after taking into consideration experts’ evidence and input on the safe medical use of both drugs.

“This will have a positive effect on ketum farmers in Malaysia, who can now have a piece of the economy from the sales of their ketum,” he said, in response to Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Md Akin’s (Hang Tuah Jaya-PH) question on a potential roadmap for the legalisation of ketum products in the country.

Last Thursday (July 4), Khairy said his ministry aims to release the framework for the registration of CBD products next year.

He stressed that CBD should be prescribed, and medical officers will have to be trained to prescribe the substance.

The ministry, he said, will have to take a step-by-step approach to legalise CBD in the country. – The Vibes, July 21, 2022
