KUALA LUMPUR – Organisers of the #TurunMalaysia protest have accused police of intimidation after being summoned to give their statements on the event held last Saturday.

The developments come after 15 additional people were called in to give their statements at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters today over the protest.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Mohd Rafiq Shamir said all of them have given their full cooperation to the police.

“But what we wish to highlight here is that this is a form of intimidation of students, NGOs (non-governmental organisations), and political parties against voicing our opinions.

“However, we will continue to air our opinions on the rising cost of goods and the other five items we demanded last Saturday,” he said as quoted by The Vibes’ Bahasa Malaysia sister publication Getaran.

Senior Muda leaders, namely party deputy president Amira Aisya Abd Aziz, party vice-president Thanussha Francis Xavier, and Perak Muda chief Mutalib Uthman, along with party co-founders Amir Abdul Hadi, Mathen Nair, and Nur Atiqah Umairah were also called to give their statements.

Other notable persons that gave their statements include Suara Rakyat Malaysia executive director Sevan Doraisamy and a few other student leaders that helped organise the protest.

They were all investigated under Section 9 (5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.

Earlier today, all of the aforementioned individuals were present at the district police headquarters along with their legal representatives at 2.30pm.

Previously, Getaran had also reported that 30 individuals who attended the protest were called to give their statements to police.

Yesterday, nine political figures from the opposition, including PKR youth chief Adam Adli and Ketari assemblyman Young Syefura Othman, were present at Dang Wangi to give their statements. – The Vibes, July 26, 2022
