KUALA LUMPUR – Datuk Seri Najib Razak should be named Malaysia’s “tourism icon” as he is well-known around the world, Amanah lawmaker Mohamed Hanipa Maidin (Sepang-PH) said in a jibe at the convicted former prime minister.
Hanipa said in the Dewan Rakyat today, when debating amendments to the Tourism Tax Act 2017, that Malaysia was not well-known globally despite its many tourist destinations and activities.
Najib, however, is “well-known globally”, Hanipa said, alluding to the Pekan MP’s involvement in the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) scandal.
Najib is currently standing trial for graft involving RM2.28 billion of 1MDB funds, and is also appealing his 2020 conviction for graft charges involving a former 1MDB subsidiary, SRC International Sdn Bhd.
“Thank God Malaysia is well known throughout the world. Whether it is a good or bad reason is another thing, but we are well known.
"That is why I suggest we name YB Pekan (Najib) a tourism icon,” Hanipa said.
Earlier in his debate, Hanipa said his constituency of Sepang is only known globally because of the Formula One circuit. Beyond that, he said, tourists had no further information on the area, or even Malaysia.
Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman (Pasir Salak-BN) then interjected to complain about a dilapidated tourist resort in his constituency in Perak.
Hanipa then sarcastically quipped that Tajuddin is overwhelmed by having to manage both Pasir Salak and Indonesia, in reference to the latter’s nomination as Malaysian ambassador at the latter country.
“Dah la belum dapat lagi (All the more so even though I’m not appointed yet),” said Tajuddin in a quick retort that drew laughter from lawmakers.
Hanipa again joked that perhaps Tajuddin should resign from politics and take on any suitable job vacancy.
“It is okay, perhaps you should just apply for a job at any petrol pump,” he said, drawing laughter from lawmakers. -- The Vibes, Aug 3, 2022
