KUALA LUMPUR – Grab Malaysia has denied reducing base fares for its delivery riders, following the announcement of the upcoming Food Delivery Blackout picket by riders in the nation’s capital tomorrow.

In a statement, Grab Malaysia said a recent complaint raised by a delivery partner about discrepancies in his earnings was due to a glitch in its system.

The company explained that it has rectified the issue and has transferred the shortfall to all affected partners, and issued a clarification on its official communication channel on July 21.

“We apologise for the inconvenience this may have caused for our partners and would like to encourage our partners to reach out to us via our Facebook, or visit us at GDC should they have any further queries,” Grab Malaysia said.

“We wish to reassure all users, including our consumers and merchant-partners, that Grab remains committed to supporting our delivery-partner community. Over the years we have introduced various efforts to support our delivery-partners.”

Earlier today, food delivery riders said they were planning to stage the Food Delivery Blackout picket in the nation’s capital.

The picket is understood to be aimed at sending a clear message to e-hailing companies and the government regarding some of the demands made by the group.

According to The Vibes’ Bahasa Malaysia sister portal Getaran, one of the demands from the picket included the current delivery rate, which is alleged to be lower than before.

PKR Youth strategy director, Bryan Ng Yih Miin, said the group had also raised concerns over the uncontrolled number of food delivery riders available, which has created competition and resulted in a decrease in their income.

In its support efforts, Grab Malaysia said it has provided on-the-job protection with free personal accident coverage and a partnership with the Employees Provident Fund to ease contribution and up to 10% additional incentives for eligible recipients.

“We are also assisting our partners to save on their operational expenses (such as discounts on petrol, vehicle maintenance, daily necessities, and more),” it said.

“Additionally, we also introduced multiple promotions and campaigns such as our recently launched GrabUnlimited to help our partners.

It added that the subscription pack with more than 50 different discount vouchers aims to not only increase sales for merchants but also provide more jobs for the delivery-partners.

“As always, we want to remind all our delivery-partners to be safe while on the road,” it said.

“Should they encounter any issues, please report to the relevant authorities and Grab. To the public we would like to advise to not share any rumours or false allegations so as to not cause panic.” – The Vibes, August 4, 2022
