A FEMALE e-hailing driver’s decision to install a metal barrier around her seat has gone viral, reigniting debate over the safety risks faced by ride-hailing drivers and whether enough is being done to protect them.

The discussion began after a passenger shared a video on Threads showing the driver seated inside a metal enclosure that separated her from passengers in the back seat.

“It was my first time getting into an e-hailing car like this. Imagine having to lock yourself inside a cage just to earn a living using your own car,” the passenger wrote.

The video quickly drew thousands of reactions, with many netizens expressing sympathy for the driver, saying her precaution reflected the growing security concerns faced by those working alone in the industry.

Several users recounted personal experiences involving violent crimes against e-hailing drivers.

“I understand why she did it. My friend was murdered while working as an e-hailing driver,” one commenter said.

Another wrote: “You can’t blame her. My father was robbed by a passenger while driving for an e-hailing service.”

The viral clip has renewed calls for stronger safety measures, with many urging ride-hailing platforms to improve passenger screening and introduce better protections for drivers.

At the same time, others questioned whether the metal enclosure was the safest option.

Some suggested a transparent acrylic partition could offer similar protection without restricting movement during emergencies.

“It’s better to use an acrylic barrier. A metal cage won’t necessarily stop someone armed with a knife or scissors,” one user commented.

Others also warned that a fixed metal barrier could make it more difficult for the driver to escape if the vehicle was involved in a crash or caught fire. - June 26, 2026
