GEORGE TOWN – Penang mufti Datuk Seri Wan Salim Wan Mohd Noor has urged the authorities to set controls and establish certain guidelines for art and cultural activities held in the country.
He said it was necessary for such activities to not deviate from the religious teachings and Eastern culture and values held dearly by Malaysians.
“Those dazzled by Western civilisation often try to inject foreign culture among the people of this country, with the younger generation being the main target.
“By inviting Western artistes, especially those known for their stances of supporting LGBT culture, it is a strong stimulus for moral deviance, especially among young people. “Subsequently, this situation will also drag them towards committing crimes, violence, and drug addiction,” he said in a statement here today.
Last week, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Idris Ahmad opined that concerts deemed detrimental should not be held in the country, because such unrestricted forms of entertainment would spoil the next generation.
Idris was also reported to have said that the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) was upset that only representatives of the Malaysian Islamic Development Department had objected to the organisation of concerts by Western artistes at a recent meeting session with various agencies.
The issue became controversial following the performance of United States singer Billie Eilish at the Bukit Jalil Stadium on August 18, which received objections from Muslims in the country. – Bernama, September 1, 2022
