BERA – A local MCA stalwart has called for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob to be allowed to decide for himself, without pressure from any quarters, when Parliament is to be dissolved prior to the expiry of its term in July next year.

Datuk Wai Che Seng, the party’s former Bera division chairman, said this is imperative given that the country’s economic situation has not yet fully recovered.

He said Ismail Sabri, who is the MP for Bera, is doing his best in looking after the interests of all the people.

“He is a person who cares and pays attention to the condition of the people. I am confident that he will always listen and take into account the voices of all, regardless of race.

“As I see it, after more than a year since he was elected as prime minister, his performance is at a good and satisfactory level,” he said.

Wai said there is no need to pressure Ismail Sabri to hold a general election in the near future.

“It is not something that needs to be done immediately,” he said in an interview with Getaran, the Malay language sister portal of The Vibes.

Wai explained that as prime minister, Ismail Sabri certainly has his own plans, and will consider various aspects before proposing the dissolution of Parliament.

A resident of Kg Seberang Guai in Bera, Jeliah Daud, 69, however, said the decision to hold an election is Ismail Sabri’s right.

“It doesn’t matter when you want to hold an election. You can do it now, you can do it next year.

“So it’s up to the prime minister. We shall just go along. If they tell us (to go out) to vote, we’ll go,” he said.

‘No need to delay’

However, a resident of Kg Kuala Triang, also in Bera, Aida Ahmad, 54, believes that the 15th general election (GE15) should be held as soon as possible to pave the way for the formation of a more stable government.

“With the current political atmosphere, I think it is good for the election to be held early, because Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob does not have any issues or problems that the opposition can capitalise on.

“If we wait until next year, until the end of the term, we don’t know what will happen and what issues may arise after this.

“That’s why, if you want to hold an election, do it now. There’s no need to delay,” he said.

Asked about the insistence by members from Ismail Sabri’s own party Umno that Parliament should be dissolved immediately, Aida said they provide a viewpoint that needs to be taken into account, as now is the best time to hold an election. – The Vibes, September 12, 2022
