KUALA LUMPUR – Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah has expressed Malaysia’s commitment to enhancing relations with Brunei Darussalam in the fields of economy and trade, education and defence as well as economic cooperation encompassing Sabah and Sarawak.
His Majesty expressed the commitment during a meeting with Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei, at the Brunei Palace in London yesterday, said Comptroller of the Royal Household for Istana Negara Datuk Seri Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin.
He said the two monarchs touched on the close bilateral relationship that has been in existence for a long time and the efforts to strengthen the ties.
“The Yang di-Pertuan Agong expressed confidence that trade and investment flow between Malaysia and Brunei can be strengthened and more economic cooperation can be explored for mutual benefit,” Fadil said in a post today on Istana Negara’s Facebook page.
He said Al-Sultan Abdullah was of the opinion that the Malaysia-Brunei Annual Leaders’ Consultation is an important foundation for realising efforts to strengthen bilateral relations.
The king also stated that Malaysia welcomed Brunei government’s decision to fully reopen its borders on August 1, thus better facilitating the movement of people of both countries, especially in Sarawak and Sabah, in addition to boosting economic activities along the two countries’ common borders, he said.
The last time that the two leaders met was during Al-Sultan Abdullah and Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Hajah Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah’s state visit to Brunei in August 2019.
Fadil said the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and Raja Permaisuri Agong left for Malaysia yesterday after concluding their six-day special visit to London to attend Queen Elizabeth II’s state funeral on September 19 at Westminster Abbey. – Bernama, September 22, 2022
