PUTRAJAYA – The government allocated RM5.6 billion to construct a dual-function reservoir meant for raw water supply and flood mitigation of Sg Klang-Sg Rasau and for Phase 2 of the Langat 2 Water Treatment Plant.
Once completed, the two projects will increase Selangor’s water supply reserve margin to over 15% and supply 1.4 million litres of water daily for 467,000 account holders, Environment and Water Minister Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said.
He said the projects that will kick off in January are scheduled to be completed within five years with the cooperation of the Selangor government.
“The reservoir will be able to provide at least three months of water supply should there be any incidences of contamination at water treatment plants,” he told a media conference after chairing a special committee meeting on the implementation of the projects here today.
Tuan Ibrahim said the reservoir will also serve as a flood control facility during floods.
“It is capable of extracting as much as 26 million m3 of water from Sungai Klang during peak flow that would cause an estimated drop of up to 500mm downstream,” he said.
He said the government has implemented various projects to reduce the risk of flooding in the Klang Valley, including increasing the number of flood warning sirens, web camera stations, water level and rain monitoring centres and increasing the lifespan of bunds.
“Flood warning sirens were increased from seven to 33, web camera stations from 34 to 53, water level monitoring centres from 13 to 41, rain monitoring centres (30 to 53) and the lifespan of bunds increased from 100 to 200 years,” he said, adding that the project has been completed with a cost of RM66 million. – Bernama, September 29, 2022
