KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom) will monitor and intervene if airfare prices skyrocket unreasonably ahead of the looming 15th general election (GE15), said caretaker transport minister Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong.
“I will leave it to Mavcom to monitor (the situation).
“If airlines hike up their fares unreasonably and do not follow the rules, then Mavcom can protect travellers,” said Wee as quoted by The Star.
Wee was speaking to the press after launching the Taxi4U app at the Land Public Transport Agency office in Kuala Lumpur earlier today.
Wee then briefly explained that airlines practise dynamic pricing, which is subject to supply and demand, among other factors.
“This is practised by airlines across the world, where early bookings will have cheaper prices and when it’s closer to a specific event, the price will be higher,” he said.
His comments come after Malaysians on social media voiced their frustration with skyrocketing airline prices following the Election Commission’s (EC) announcement on the GE15 dates earlier today.
Earlier today, the EC announced that Malaysia will go to the polls on November 19, with early voting occurring on November 15.
This includes the Perak, Perlis, and Pahang elections, along with the Bugaya by-election in Sabah.
Nominations will be held on November 5, with the campaign period lasting 14 days. – The Vibes, October 20, 2022
