KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has advised Malaysians to be mindful of their social media posts as the nation prepares for the 15th general election (GE15).
The body urged citizens taking to social media to vent their thoughts to always employ proper communication etiquette when interacting with others on online platforms.
“MCMC would like to remind all parties, especially social media users, to always watch their manners and be considerate when delivering their views or thoughts (on any matter),” it said in a statement yesterday.
It added that it will be continuing efforts to curb the spread of false information and offensive statements involving the “3R” elements – royalty, religion and race.
Sharing of content that is “false, offensive and threatening” is a crime under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, the body cautioned.
If found guilty of the offence involving the misuse of communication networks, the accused party faces a RM50,000 fine, up to one year in jail, or both.
“Enforcement activities will be carried out transparently based on complaints by the public in line with existing legal provisions to protect public peace,” it said.
The Election Commission (EC) has announced that polling for GE15 will be held on November 19, with nomination day fixed on November 5, while early voting will take place on November 15.
Subsequently, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong yesterday called on candidates and supporters of political parties to be civil throughout the GE15 campaign period.
In a statement, the king advised all parties involved in the election to engage in healthy campaigning and comply with regulations set by authorities, especially the EC and police. – The Vibes, October 21, 2022
