Weather warning: six states at risk of flash floods

KUALA LUMPUR – The Irrigation and Drainage Department (DID) has issued a flood preparedness notice for Pahang, Johor, Selangor, Melaka, Negri Sembilan and Sarawak.

In a statement around 5.30pm, it said the notice was issued based on rain forecast information provided by the Meteorological Department using the Numerical Weather Prediction model and the Southeastern Asia-Oceania Flood Guidance System on the possibility of flash floods due to heavy rain or a significant thunderstorm within 12 hours of the notice being issued.

It said in Pahang, the affected locations in the Rompin district included Kg Ayau, Leban Chondong, Fisherman’s Housing, Kg Setajam, Kg Tanjung Pahang, Kg Pianggu, Kg Perpat, Kg Gading, and Kg Sarang Tiong.

Meanwhile, in the Temerloh district the areas were Kg Bangau Tanjung, Kg Baru and Kg Teluk Sentang in Kuala Krau; Kg Batu Sawar, Kg Berhala Gantang, Kg Bintang, Kg Bukit Lada, Kg Desa Baru Purun, Kg Jenderak, Kg Kerai, Kg Lubuk Kawah, Kg Padang Tenggala, Kg Tanjung Pandan, Kg Peragap, Kg Pulau Pasir Mandi, Kg Sanggang, and Taman Sri Desa, it added.

It said in Kuantan, the areas were Kg Chendor, Kg Cherating, Taman Balok Damai, Sri Mahkota, Padang Maju housing area, Kg Chendering, Sg Isap, Taman Galing, Kg Sg Tiram and Kg Sg Lembing.

In the Mersing district at-risk areas were Kg Air Tawar, Kg Semaloi, Kg Asli Labong, Kg Semanyir, Sg Padang, Kg Kuria Batu 4 in the Triang sub-district and Kg Sg Mengkuang, it said.

It added that in Muar, flash floods were expected to hit Kg Parit Raja, Parit Keroma, Parit Keroma Darat, Taman Keroma, Kg Kenangan TDI 5, Parit Haji Zain, Batu 15 Air Hitam, Kg Parit Yaakup, Kg Parit Karim Hulu, Kg Parit Haji Zain, Kg Parit Salmandan Kg Parit Shafiee, as well as Labis Park and Kg Usaha Jaya in Segamat.

It also said that flooding might occur in Kg Tg Gading Darat, Kg Parit Gelugor, Kg Gelugor, Parit Idrus, Kg Anjung Batu, Taman Payamas, and Kg Pengkalan Besar.

The department also urged residents in Selangor, particularly in Kg Teluk Gong, Taman Daya Meru and Pekan Meru to be prepared for possible flash floods.

It also said floods might hit Masjid Tanah and Kg Jeram (Alor Gajah, Melaka) and  Kg Jimah, Kg Sg Sendayan, Kg Janging and Kg Sawah Sunggala, all located in Port Dickson, Negri Sembilan.

Meanwhile, in Sarawak, it said the affected areas were Taman Bong Chin, Happy Valley, Taman Evergreen, Jalan Green Sports Complex, Central Park, Desa Wira, and Kg Gita in the Kuching district.

DID said the preparedness notice was issued to allow all residents to be aware of any possibility of flash floods within the period.

“Please follow the instructions of the authorities or flood disaster management agencies,” read the statement.
