KOTA KINABALU – Sabah PKR leaders were the worst performers in the state Pakatan Harapan (PH) alliance, winning only Sepanggar after contesting in 10 parliamentary seats.
Sabah PKR chairman Datuk Sangkar Rasam lost in Pensiangan to Barisan Nasional’s (BN) candidate from Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah, Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup, who managed to defend his seat with a 5,412-vote majority.
Arthur garnered 19,623 votes while Sangkar got 14,211 votes.
Sabah PH chief Datuk Christina Liew, who is a former Sabah PKR chairman, also failed to defend her seat in Tawau after Gabungan Rakyat’s Lo Su Fui, who is from Parti Bersatu Sabah, won with a 3,800-vote majority.
Besides Pensiangan and Tawau, PKR also lost Putatan, Ranau, Kudat, Kota Belud, Beaufort, Kalabakan, and Semporna.
Winning Sepanggar was a surprise as Sabah PKR’s candidate Mustapha Sakmud garnered 27,022 votes to beat Warisan’s information chief Datuk Mohd Azis Jamman.
Azis got the third-highest number of votes, at 18,594, after BN’s Yakub Khan who captured 19,980 votes.
Sabah PH contested 24 out of 26 seats in Sabah, and lost 19.
Sabah DAP, which won three seats in the last election, won only two this time – Sandakan (Vivian Wong) and Kota Kinabalu (Chan Foong Hin).

Other than Tenom, DAP also lost Batu Sapi, Lahad Datu, Keningau, and Papar.
Upko, the only local party in Sabah PH, won two out of the five seats it contested.
Upko president Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau successfully defended Tuaran against PBS’ Datuk Joniston Bangkuai with a 233-vote majority (24,943 votes against Bangkuai’s 24,710 votes).
Upko vice-president cum incoming president, Datuk Ewon Benedick, won with an unexpectedly large majority, 14,410 votes, in Penampang – garnering a total of 29,066 votes. It was a surprise win against Warisan’s vice-president Datuk Darell Leiking.
Upko lost in Libaran, Beluran, and Kimanis.
Amanah contested in one seat – Sipitang, where Lahirul Latigu (4,834 votes), lost the seat to GRS’ Datuk Matbali Musah (14,459 votes), and Warisan’s Datuk Adnan Puteh (9,768 votes). –The Vibes, November 20, 2022
