KUALA LUMPUR – Shocked at the cancellation of a Barisan Nasional (BN) supreme council meeting that was supposed to take place tonight, MCA dropped a bombshell by declaring it has lost all confidence in coalition chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

This came just a day after BN recorded its worst ever performance in a general election, where the former ruling regime only managed to win 30 parliamentary seats out of the total 222 available in the Dewan Rakyat.

MCA secretary-general Datuk Chong Sin Woon, in a statement today, urged Zahid to step down so a new leader could take over and lead BN.

He added that MCA is of the opinion that the BN chairman should immediately call for the coalition’s supreme council meeting.

“MCA is firm that no single party can represent BN to negotiate with any political parties without the mandate from the coalition’s supreme council.”

Chong was also baffled with Zahid’s decision to cancel the meeting which was supposed to take place tonight.

“In times of a shaky political landscape, there’s a pressing need for the (BN) supreme council meeting to take place to discuss current issues and make a decision as a coalition.”

Other factions and leaders in BN-linchpin Umno have been calling for Zahid to step down while Sabah Umno chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin had expressed otherwise.

Bung Moktar today said BN’s shock defeat should be the collective responsibility of all its leaders.

This morning, Zahid chaired Umno’s political bureau meeting at its headquarters here, but Bung Moktar said there was yet to be a decision on joining any coalition.

After polling day, no single coalition has secured a simple majority of 112 seats to form the government and the Yang di-Pertuan Agong has given the elected reps until 2pm tomorrow to submit a prime minister candidate who enjoys majority support. – The Vibes, November 20, 2022
