KUALA LUMPUR – The three campsites affected by the deadly landslide in Batang Kali early this morning have been operating illegally for at least two years, said Local Government Development Minister Nga Kor Ming.
During a site visit today, he added that the operators involved could face up to three years in jail and a maximum fine of RM50,000.
He said the campsites went against the Street, Drainage and Building Act 1974, as the operators only have approvals in 2019 from the Hulu Selangor Municipal Council for plans to have organic farms.
The minister also ordered all 155 local councils nationwide to immediately vacate all campsites by the rivers, waterfalls and hillsides for seven days.
“The government will take stringent actions against the operators. Nobody is above the law.”
He added that the directive to empty the campsites is in line with the downpour predicted to take place for five days starting tomorrow.
“Please take safety precautions when carrying out outdoor recreational activities, especially in high-risk locations.
“I urge all parents to pick recreational spots that are safe to go to during school holidays. Nothing is more important than the safety of yourself and family.”
Meanwhile, Bernama reported that a total of 51 adults and 30 children were registered for an overnight stay at the Father’s Organic Farm campsite in Batang Kali.
The person in charge of the campsite, who only wished to be known as Chang, said she is unsure if there are any children below four at the campsite, as they are not required to register. Only children between the ages of four and 12 need to register.
As of 1pm, 16 people are dead and 17 missing from the early morning landslide at a campsite in Batang Kali, said the Local Government Development Ministry.
Of the 94 victims involved, 61 have been rescued.
In a statement posted at 1.28pm today, Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the landslide was 300m in length and 70m in height but there were no warning signs prior. – The Vibes, December 16, 2022
