GEORGE TOWN – Penang, which is facing a state election next year, has pledged to uphold the promises it has made to improve the standards of living here.
In his new year’s message, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said that 2023 will be another year the state moves to hasten its goal of Vision2030 to transform the island into a global cosmopolitan destination.
Chow also renewed the pledge to consolidate the state’s outstanding achievements in foreign direct investments, noting that from January until September this year, Penang recorded RM9.2 billion in investments for the manufacturing sector.
This is compared with RM2.9 billion over the same period in 2021.
Manufacturing, together with services and complemented by trade as well as agriculture, remains the hallmarks of the state’s economy.
Chow said that the priority next year remains to upscale the skills of workers here, in view of a report by the Malaysian Industrial Development Authority that some 12,754 high-value jobs would be created in the next few years here.
As Penang marks the 50th anniversary of its industrialisation path this year, Chow said, the state is committed to continue its momentum for the next 50 years.
He also assured that the state remains committed to execute the Penang Transport Master Plan, pointing out the need for a light rail transit system and the construction of the Pan Island Link 1 highway to disperse traffic better.
“We will also continue to develop without compromising on our green agenda.”
Chow also spoke about ensuring affordable housing is made accessible to young working adults, and continuing the legacy of the “Penang Leads” motto.
Among the state’s achievements are being verified by the National Audit Department in 2021 as having the best financial track record nationwide, having the lowest debt, and being accredited as one of the cleanest tourism cities in Asean.
Channelling welfare to the needy is also important, with RM53 million set aside under its flagship i-Sejahtera scheme to lower living costs among the disabled, destitute, and senior citizens.
“Penang will continue to also support Islam’s needs as it is the official religion, while not neglecting other religions. RM4.5 million was especially allocated to spearhead the digitisation process in the state.”
