KUALA LUMPUR – Wet weather over the Chinese New Year has seen flooding in Johor worsen, with 3,612 people evacuated as of 8am today since water levels began rising yesterday.

As of midnight, there were 2,912 evacuees as Batu Pahat became the latest district to be hit by floods, the state disaster management committee said, according to Bernama.

Floods have also hit other parts of Johor and a total of 35 temporary relief centres have been opened as of today, in Kota Tinggi, Kluang, Mersing, Segamat dan Batu Pahat.

The committee said Segamat remained the worst-hit district with the highest number of evacuees, at 1,392 people from 393 families.

The Irrigation and Drainage Department meanwhile said four rivers in the state are being monitored as they had breached the danger levels, namely Sg Muar, Sg Lenik, Sg Segamat and Sg Kajang.

Yesterday, Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said that all officials and agencies, including state executive council members, must play their part in monitoring the flooded areas. – The Vibes, January 25, 2023
