PUTRAJAYA – The Home Ministry is in the midst of holding engagement sessions to review provisions of the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma), minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said today.
The stakeholders involved include the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform), civil societies and individuals, he was reported saying by New Straits Times.
Saifuddin’s confirmation today that engagement sessions are ongoing to review Sosma follows his stance last year after becoming home minister when he said the ministry had no plans to do so.
He said then that Sosma was still needed to deal with investigations into organised crimes, which could involve large numbers of suspects arrested.
The controversial aspects of Sosma include a 28-day detention period without the need to produce suspects before a judge and limits on the provision of bail.
Saifuddin was criticised by civil society groups last year for his remarks.
Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Ramkarpal Singh then said a review of Sosma was needed. – The Vibes, January 27, 2023
