KUALA LUMPUR – International Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz is aiming for a spot on the Umno Supreme Council in the party’s upcoming elections.

The senator made his intentions known to Astro Awani, saying that he was offering himself for the post as part of building a foundation for long-term political service.

“If I am given the chance, I will offer myself to contest. Politics is dynamic and the most important is to be effective in serving the country and community,” he said.

Meanwhile, the New Straits Times (NST) listed several names said to be in the running for the three Umno vice-presidents’ posts currently filled by former prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid, and Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.

NST said Khaled would defend his post, while others said to be in the running are current supreme council members Datuk Seri Zambry Abdul Kadir, Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani, and Youth chief Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.

NST also said former Johor menteri besar Datuk Seri Hasni Mohammad might run for a vice-president’s spot while naming Sabah Umno chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin who could make a similar bid as well.

Umno’s elections have been postponed to be held after the 15th general election last November, and must now hold its polls by May.

However, the presidency and deputy president’s posts will unlikely be contested as the party delegates approved a no-contest motion for these posts at its recent annual general assembly. – The Vibes, February 1, 2023
